My Favourite Album

What's yours? Apparently Australia's favourite is Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd, which I have, but have never listened to! How has this happened? Well, I've got loads of films that I recorded from the tele years ago, but have only just got around to watching them. In the same vein, I have never touched DS of the M, though if it was D of the S&M I might be tempted to give it a shot (at least once).

A digression - I don't think Radiohead are either depressing or pretentious. I also don't like them all that much. They're alright I suppose. Maybe it was inevitable that the p word would be thrown up on tonight's ABC special because the songs on OK Computer don't go verse chorus verse chorus bridge chorus chorus. But then if unpretentious is Nevermind by Nirvana then give me skinny lattes and a copy of the Fin Review! (And a copy of OK Computer, maybe on cassette so I can record over it one day).

I don't think "best of" compilations counted in this poll, but if I were to choose the album that I have listened to the most it would easily be (The Best of) New Order. For about 2 years I just couldn't stop putting it on - and trying to turn everyone else onto it, and realising at the end of those 2 years that they really didn't give a shit about it. Primal Scream's Screamadelica comes to mind as a possible candidate for my favourite album, as does anything by Uncle Tupelo, particularly Anodyne. Want One by Rufus Wainwright has been a stayer, and I was once a big fan of Billy Bragg and Wilco's Mermaid Avenue, and then strayed into dangerous territory. Yes, I started listening to alternative country music after being introduced to BB&W, which is only marginally less dangerous than stumbling onto a BBW website. I think Pneumonia by Whiskeytown, if I absolutely had to back a horsie, might be my choice, but only because The B-52's Party Mix/ Mesopotamia is ruled out because, being two albums in one, it's sort of cheating. I also picked it up at Woolworths but because it was less than $30 I didn't get the petrol discount voucher.

I'm off to listen to Pink Floyd...
